Approximately 19% of the student population at Tilton School is international students, the majority of whom speak English as a second language. These students are from 16 foreign countries; Tilton School limits the number of students from any one country. Tilton School is committed to serving both the curricular and the cultural needs of international students, and the School has two programs in place to serve these ends: the International Program and the English As a Second Language Program.
Goals of the International Program:
- To promote the celebration of diversity and multiculturalism at Tilton School.
- To present resources and develop initiatives to inform the School as a whole about the curricular and cultural needs of international students.
- To make the most of the international student experience and bring the benefits of multiculturalism into the classroom and the school community.
The International Program at Tilton School considers all aspects of international students' lives at the School. In order to meet the goals above, the School supports international students with the following:
International Student Orientation: A series of meetings which run concurrent with the regular student orientation and are designed to introduce international students to the School, to promote international student sharing and community, and to outline what students can expect to encounter in the transition period ahead.
Multicultural Awareness/Diversity Initiatives: Multicultural Diversity Club: A student-led club open to all members of the school community, the MDC sponsors a broad range of cultural activities, workshops, etc. throughout the year. All activities are designed to raise awareness of culture and to celebrate the diverse perspectives and experiences of this community and beyond.
International Culture Fair: A celebration of cultural cooking, crafts, dress and history through interactive presentations created by world language students and international students.
Interscholastic Diversity Conferences: Workshops and conferences for international students and diversity groups attended by and sponsored by Tilton School. Students have the opportunity to share ideas and interact with students from other area schools.
ESL Course culture studies: A series of cultural discussions, field trips and hands-on activities undertaken in ESL language courses designed to promote international students' cross-cultural understanding.
ESL Student Community Outreach: An annual program in which a group of international students travels to the Tilton/Northfield Recreation Center and teaches local children about various countries, languages and cultures through presentations and activities.
International Parent Newsletter: A biannual newsletter sent to international parents and written by international students reporting on areas of Tilton School life and showcasing student art and writing.
Assisted Vacation Homestay Placement: In cases in which an international student has no destination for long weekends or other school vacations, the School will assist the family in finding a homestay option, often with a fellow student's family. |
