Venturing Outside the Formal Curriculum

Exploratory, self-designed programs of study represent the ultimate student-school partnership. Students willing to venture outside the formal curriculum to design their own learning program demonstrate the two habits of mind most closely associated with successful leadership -- vision and initiative. Tilton School encourages students to strike out on their own, beyond the classroom and into the world of work and learning beyond campus.

    Faculty members at Tilton School often offer their expertise by supervising a student in an independent study - or an opportunity to work 1:1 on any number of topics.

    What is a MOOC?  MOOC stands for Massive Open Online Course, or a model of delivering learning content online to an interested participant.  MOOCs are often offered by some of the nation's top universities!

Lexi Moore '15: Hospital Internship

In her words: "In August before my senior year, I participated in an internship at Lakes Region General Hospital. I learned about each department in the hospital, as well as engaged in hands on activities in the pharmacy and watched surgeries. When I began my senior year, I wanted to continue working with the hospital in some fashion, as well as expand my knowledge and experiences for college.  This resulted in me riding with the ambulatory system every week during the winter season. During these 10 weeks, I observed and helped with emergency calls such as physical injuries, hypoglycemia, strokes and heart. I did this outside activity in conjunction with my winter commitment as the boy's varsity basketball manager and with an incredible amount of consideration from the team's coach. This fall I will be entering a Nursing to Nurse Practitioner Program at Saint Joseph’s College of Maine."
