Skills You Learn at Summer Camp

Sarah O'Neill
If you attended summer camp as a child, chances are you still carry your experiences with you as an adult. Why not give your children the same experience? Here are just some of the important skills a camp experience introduces to kids.
Teamwork
While at a camp, children learn how to work well with others. This is something they are (hopefully) already learning in school and at home, but a camp takes it further. In a fun yet educational setting, they quickly learn that working as a team is more enjoyable and rewarding.

Skill Development
Whether it be social, math, reading, or kayaking, skill development is a strong point of a camp experience. The benefit of camps like Tilton School Summer Institute (TSSI) is that you can cater the experience to what your child is interested in. Beyond that, they may come home with a brand new passion they had not yet explored.

Sportsmanship
This doesn’t just apply to sports! While at camp, kids learn how to play well with others and treat everyone with respect, even if the odds are not in their favor.

Connectedness
Lifelong connections are made at camp. There is a bond that happens while amongst peers in a unifying space. Feeling like you are connected to others with a similar purpose or skill can help instill confidence at a young age!

Resilience
Being away from home without parents, even if it’s just for hours a day, is hard for young kids. Just making the decision to leave home takes courage! While on their own, children learn so much about their capabilities and what they can overcome.

Communication
Learning to communicate effectively is such an important life skill. Spending a summer at camp means kids learn how to communicate with adults who aren’t their parents as well as their peers.

If you’re looking for a good summer camp fit for your child, look no further than Tilton School Summer Institute (TSSI). Open to students age 11 - 14, this 3-week program (day or overnight) is a dynamic summer experience your child will never forget. TSSI runs from July 7-27, and there’s still time to register!
