Meet Tilton School Peer Counselors

Tilton School
Tilton School Peer Counselors further supports the health and wellness of our student body. Coordinated by Angela Juurlink, School Counselor, Peer Counselors are nominated by their peers based on each individual's ability to be nonjudgmental and supportive to other students. Each Peer Counselor is committed to meeting for training opportunities each week. Internal trainings are designed to build active listening skills, knowledge in Stages of Change, and mediation. Our group also hosts events for faculty and students such as: Safe Space training, which addresses LGBT acceptance; hosting guest speakers to discuss healthy relationships and supporting friends in general.
So who are Tilton School Peer Counselors, and how can they help? See below for profiles of each student!

Why Are Peer Counselors Important? Peer counseling is a way for students to find trustworthy peers they can go to when they need a little extra support. Everyone has tough moments they need to get through and it can help to have a person there who can support you through it.
What Can Peer Counselors Do to Help Tilton Students? They can listen to problems in a confidential manner; your story will remain private. Peer counselors are trained to listen and offer support without handing  advice out too quickly. They are also trained to refrain from judgment, but to see the situation from your perspective.

Years as a Peer Counselor: Since my sophomore year
Why Did You Become a Peer Counselor? I was nominated by faculty members as a freshman and once it was mentioned to me by Mrs. Juurlink, I really liked that idea that I was another level of help to students, that I could another trusted person, even if they didnt know me well. To me, Tilton has always been a safe place so being able to pay that forward really intrigued me.
Why Are Peer Counselors Important? They are another tier of help for students, a middle person who can be really helpful. I think a lot of times dorm proctors deal with issues within friend groups or dorm life, so its important that there are other people who might be more educated about dealing with certain situations or referring people to Mrs.Juurlink or other necessary resources.
What Can Peer Counselors Do to Help Tilton Students? We are here for you to talk to, whether you feel homesick, or simply want a new face to have a conversation with. We as group, are here to help you in however much, or little way, you want us to and we are happy to do it.
What’s the Best Way a Student Can Reach Out to You? People are more than welcome to come and talk to me face to face, but if that is uncomfortable, an email is totally okay too!
Favorite Food? I really like avocados and my family's buffalo chicken dip.

Why Did You Become a Peer Counselor? I have had an interest in improving the health and wellness of students here at Tilton since my freshman year. The Peer Counseling Program has been a great way for me to learn from students about how to make Tilton a more supportive place.
Why Are Peer Counselors Important?  Peer Counselors are the perfect middle ground between a friend and some kind of leadership figure. We are happy to talk to you and provide support without the uncomfortability you may feel speaking with an adult.
What Can Peer Counselors Do to Help Tilton Students? Peer Counsellors are available to listen to any problems a student may be having and can give private non-judgemental advice.

Years as a Peer Counselor: 2 years
Why Did You Become a Peer Counselor? I became a peer counselor because I thought I would be good at talking to students about their certain issues, and I want to help. I can relate to people and I am a great listener.
Why Are Peer Counselors Important? They are important because they provide an outlet other than a teacher or even a parent. The student on student connection can be more comfortable for someone having troubles.
