The 1986 boys’ varsity tennis team built on the successes of the 1985 team and brought home the second undefeated season in as many years.
Eleven Rams were responsible for continuing this storied dynasty. Of this group, postgraduates Eric Westergren and Brad McCurdy routinely battled for the top spot in the lineup and were primarily responsible for the tremendous depth of the team’s singles contingent.
Westergren’s trademarks were his quiet determination and ferocious topspin. McCurdy came to Tilton after being ranked ninth in boys’ U18 Doubles by the USTA/WTA and had clinched second place in the A-AA Ohio State Singles Tournament. The most competitive matches that year often were between Westergren and McCurdy as they vied for Tilton’s top singles position.
Westergren went on to captain and play number 1 at Clark University for four years while McCurdy headed to Southern Mississippi University. Keith Jordan, another stand-out player on this squad, went on to become a certified tennis professional.
Richard Dubrow, Miguel Elizalde, Tom Buonora, Skip Naft, Ananth Naman, David Lord, Steve Dabrowski and Alan Segal rounded out the rest of the group responsible for bringing home another Lakes Region Championship under Head Coach Mike Landroche.
