Summer Institute

A Summer Program Like No Other

The Tilton School Summer Institute (TSSI) prepares students entering grades 6 through 9 for educational growth using a highly-personalized summer experience and self-evaluation that places the student at the center of the learning process. Our three-week overnight program is a purposeful exploration of their strengths, as well as areas for growth in what we have identified as Essential Skills: reflection, creativity and innovation, communication, and collaboration.

TSSI's program components–Discovery Tracks, Residential Living, Collaborative Partnerships and Outdoor Adventures–encourage the exploration and reinforcement of these Essential Skills by asking students to get out of their comfort zone through hands-on projects, skills practice, cultural and social guidance, and self-reflection.

At the conclusion of the session, each student will leave with an Individualized Strengths and Skills Profile (ISSP) that identifies their strengths and areas for growth as they enter their next educational chapter. Their ISSP will lead them to greater success and adaptability in an ever-changing world, whether in school, work, or their personal lives. From a heightened understanding comes the deeper appreciation of the importance of goals and therefore the tools to self-reflect, create, monitor, and revise their plans heading into secondary school and beyond.

What Makes Our Summer Program Unique

Research over the past five years increasingly highlights the importance of developing Essential Skills (the TSSI term for work practices and study habits). A recent study by the U.S. Department of Education found that these skills “are essential to an individual’s capacity to strive for and succeed at long-term and higher-order goals, and to persist in the face of the array of challenges and obstacles encountered throughout schooling and life."* Each Essential Skill carries a set of metrics on which our teachers help students measure, adapt, plan and move forward in positive directions on their learning pathway.
