Discovery Tracks

2018 Discovery Tracks

The TSSI Program Courses begin with a simple premise: Young people have within them the power to change the world. Forging your path of self discovery as you understand who you are—your aptitudes, skills, interests and learning styles—can be most rewarding when applied to activities that are both exciting and fun. At TSSI, we seek to let students follow their instincts and passions into discoveries beyond themselves where the Essential Skills can be best applied and learned from.

TSSI counselors & teachers are dedicated to helping students build their own skill sets with which they will lead others and the tools with which they will navigate the pathways of positive and lasting change.  This awareness emerges from an understanding of where you begin as an individual. Know your strengths and position yourself to use these as you build out your Essential Skills over time. By targeting these skills of the 21st century leader, the TSSI Program builds self-directed learners, confident in their abilities, enthusiastic about their own growth in high school, college and beyond, and eager to engage in the life of their community!

  • Optional Academics

Our academic support courses focus on English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and are an individualized study designed to build on each student’s current level of proficiency. We combine Reading & Writing in one class, and Listening & Speaking in another, and break out Study Skills/Test Preparation to provide a comprehensive outline for advancing each skill when you return home after the summer. Classes meet 3x/week (10 hr program total)  and are set-up so students can take 1 class or all three.

    ESOL Reading & Creative Writing
This course is focused on the introduction to the process approach to writing and the development of reading fluency and age appropriate vocabulary. Writing and grammar activities will be integrated through basic sentence structure and paragraph organization. Emphasis will be put on gaining the skills to produce a clear and well-planned paragraph through review of capitalization rules, sentence and paragraph structure, & increasing English vocabulary. Students learn and practice the techniques of creative writing using a combination reading and writing exercises and workshops. Fun course readings are used for discussion, inspiration and idea development while small class sizes enable instructor feedback and constitutes a significant component of the course.

ESOL Public Speaking & Interviewing Skills
A major improvement in TOEFL scores can be gained through instruction and extensive practice in speaking, listening and pronunciation.  Here is where you can prepare students to effectively communicate with audiences in different settings by providing instruction and experience in formal speech preparation and delivery. Students will learn to analyze speaking situations and adapt messages for audience, purpose, and context. Focus is placed on the settings used for interviewing in different types of settings such as job interviews, school admissions, and internship placement.

The Art Studio at Tilton provides a welcoming and stimulating atmosphere for students to learn the fundamentals of pottery and ceramics. Start with learning how to create basic vessels and forms on a potter’s wheel. Then move on to learn more complicated techniques in working with clay while focusing on design, glaze, and finishing techniques. Follow a passion for instruction in tiles and mosaics as an option to make your perfect designs.

PhotographyIn our hands-on photo lab, we will demystify each of the systems that make up your camera, e.g: shutter, aperture, ISO, metering and white balance. We will explore how each of those works, why they are needed, how they do what they do and why you should care. Then we discover how to use each of them artistically to improve your photography. Our lab is laid back, fun, hands-on, and led by people who LOVE to photograph.

Website & GIF ProductionSo you want to become a web designer, but you have no idea where to start. Don't panic! It's not as hard as it seems, and here’s a chance to get a peek behind the scenes. In our workshop, we will guide you through the basic steps of what it takes to design a web page. You’ll learn lots of great new information, like what tools to use and how HTML and CSS are used to create websites. Finally, you’ll put all this knowledge into practice and actually build your first functional web page.

Augmented Reality ExplorationAI in the future

Painting, Drawing, Composing - Unleash your passions. We believe there is a budding artist inside everyone.  Many artists started off sketching, drawing, and or painting before they delved their heart and souls into other forms of art. And just as many find their heart and soul remains with painting and drawing. Whatever the case maybe we have many offerings for you to explore, learn and try out different techniques.  So, whatever your skill level, here’s a chance to take a leap with us and start feeding that budding artist inside of you.

Coding and Programming with Game DesignThis is a chance to explore how games are made, from game mechanics to core loops to design docs. We start by breaking down the role of the game designer into its key parts and learn about systems and begin by creating some simple game design ideas. Then, you’ll explore how to use what we've learned about game design and game systems to craft compelling game design concepts. We’ll build out some new games and try them out on the other students.

Media Teams of the Future - Work on spreading the WORD. Today we are bombarded with information from so many different directions, how are we to know which to read and which to ignore? Effectively collecting information, putting it into a format that is easy to send, post, or save, then getting people to read and react is a skill of the future. Work with us within different media centers to understand where your message fits best and how to get out the word!!
