Health and Wellness

At Tilton School, the health and safety of our students is our number one priority. With this in mind, there are several services in place to support the health and well-being of our students.

Health Services

The Sabra M. Hamilton Health Center, located in West Knowles, serves the health needs of the Tilton School community. We are a fully licensed health care provider in the state of New Hampshire, the Health Center is open to students Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. to noon.

Students needing urgent care may be sent to a local provider's office, urgent care center or emergency room and would be billed through the students' insurance.

Services provided include:

  • Medication administration and management
  • Triage of ill and injured students
  • Vaccine administration
  • Referral coordination (x-rays, laboratory work, physical therapy, off-campus medical provider)

The Health Center is available by calling (603) 286-1760 or by email at healthcenter@tiltonschool.org.

Counseling Services

The school employs a full-time counselor, Ms. Angela Juurlink, who is a licensed clinical mental health counselor. Angela is on campus five days a week as well as by appointment and is also available for more urgent situations. Ms. Juurlink works with a variety of students as a trainer, facilitator and trouble-shooter. She is generally available for short-term counseling and coordinates long-term support with our visiting licensed counselors. There are no fees assessed to individual students by any service she provides.

In addition, for the benefit and convenience of students, the school provides on-campus access to a number of private counselors, therapists and educational testing specialists who meet with individual students for appointments on campus. It is the responsibility of families to make financial arrangements for long-term private counseling or for psycho-educational testing with individual service providers. Questions, arrangements and initial contact with private counselors should be made through Ms. Juurlink. She participates as a member of the Deans’ Team, a small group of school administrators who meet weekly to monitor and support student learning, health and personal wellness. Ms. Juurlink is also the faculty coordinator the student Health & Wellness Team and Peer Counselors.

Ms. Juurlink can be reached by phone at (603) 286-1764 or ajuurlink@tiltonschool.org.

Peer Counseling

Further supporting our student body, Ms. Juurlink coordinates our Peer Counseling Program. Peer counselors are nominated by their peers based on each individual's ability to be nonjudgmental and supportive to all other students. Each peer counselor is committed to meeting for training opportunities each week. Our internal trainings are designed to build active listening skills, knowledge in Stages of Change, and mediation. Our peer counseling group also hosts events for faculty and students such as: Safe Space training, which addresses LGBT acceptance; hosting guest speakers to discuss healthy relationships and supporting friends in general.

I became a peer counselor in order to become a better listener, talker, and problem solver. I also like being there for people and that's the main part of being a peer counselor!

Health & Wellness Team

The Health & Wellness Team is comprised of both members of our student body as well as faculty. Each year, current Health & Wellness Team students nominate new students who will contribute novel ideas, energy and a desire to help educate their peers on current wellness concerns. The philosophy of the health and wellness program reflects the notion that each student is able to make his or her own decisions; however, we want these decisions to be as educated as possible. Our team strives to educate students about relevant wellness topics through creative means including dorm presentations, monthly publications, all student presentations, an annual health fair and other interactive opportunities.

If you're not sure who you're becoming, don’t be afraid. You are not the only one. It is important to keep exploring and taking charge of my own identity, which means I am going to keep finding who I am and what my real passions are.

Campus Safety

Every staff member at Tilton School acknowledges that parents have entrusted their child with us. That is both incredibly humbling and the greatest honor. We also believe that the safety of our students is the highest priority and thus have regularly updated emergency plans and precautions in place to keep our students safe.

All residence halls and the gymnasium are secured with proximity cards, granting students access to only the appropriate dorms for their gender and age and restricting access during the nighttime hours.

Finally, there is additional security presence on campus each evening through the early morning hours. Campus security supports the work of our Administrator on Duty (one of several rotating school administrators with significant residential life experience), who is on call from dinner time each day through the following morning, and our residential life staff on duty each evening.

If you have an emergency after hours, please contact the Administrator on Duty at 603-520-6400.
